School Parliament

SCHOOL PARLIAMENT

Our School Parliament consists of three children in each class (4 in Y6) who have been voted for by their classmates.  We have regular Parliament meetings which are led by our Chair and Vice Chairs, who are voted in from the Y6 Parliament members by our members.

What are the aims of the Pupil Parliament?
  • Represent all pupils and include as many children as possible.
  • Ensure pupils’ voices are heard and views shared.
  • Feedback to pupils about the outcomes of Pupil Parliament meetings.
  • Action decisions that have been made or explain why they can’t happen.
  • Make meaningful change to improve school life for the children at All Hallows.
  • Update the Pupil Parliament page on the school website.
How does Pupil Parliament work?
  • Pupil Parliament meets regularly and members of Pupil Parliament take questions and ideas back to their classes to collect their peers’ opinions. All members of Pupil Parliament have notebooks for making notes in meetings and speaking to their classmates.
  • An assembly (either in class or in key stages) is held when a decision is being made and needs to be explained to the school or when a decision has been made and needs to be shared with everyone. Members of Pupil Parliament lead the sharing of this information.
  • Pupil Parliament share successes and projects with parents and governors, as well as staff and children.

School Parliament Charter

The School Parliament will:

  •  Promote the school Values - HEART
  •  Be a voice for every child in the school
  •  Be an architect for change- to make school the best it can be for everyone to thrive
  •  Promote the British value of democracy, ensuring compromise, consensus and that decisions are made and respected by the majority,
  •  Publish an annual intention that details how the parliament intends to support learning in the classroom, improve the school environment and make a difference to the community.

Each classroom has a suggestions box so all the children in school can suggest improvements which their representatives can bring to the parliament meetings to discuss.  Examples of the impact of this are mirrors in the toilets and Christmas Jumper days.

Our School Parliament also present certificates at our weekly Celebration Assembly to children who they feel have displayed our school values that week.

Our school Parliament focusses on listening to and representing the pupil's voice and also raising money for charity.  Recent projects have included our Reverse Advent Calendar to collect donations for the Arnold Food Bank and a toy sale to raise money for 'Shelter'.  The Parliament is currently exploring the possibility of sponsoring children at the King's School in Ghana.

Once a year we also hold a whole School Parliament where children throughout school are encouraged to debate a proposal.  In the last two years, this has resulted in a decision to hold a whole school water fight and a mixed KS1/KS2 playtime.
